Weekly Guided Bodyscan in Virtual Reality

ENGAGE XR | Ongoing immersive mindfulness program | 2023–Present

Overview

For the past three years, I have designed and facilitated a weekly guided body scan meditation in ENGAGE XR, creating a consistent contemplative practice within a shared virtual environment. The session brings participants together in VR for a live, facilitator-led practice focused on sustained attention, embodied awareness, and present-moment observation.

The program began as a roughly 25-minute guided practice and evolved through continued facilitation and participants' experience into a 35–45-minute structured session, with additional time for orientation, questions, conversation, and optional exploration of the virtual environment. Although most participants attend in their VR headsets, I facilitate the session through my laptop, and attendees are more than welcome to attend from their laptops or desktops. Experience Design

The session is intentionally structured to reduce the cognitive and technical demands that can accompany participation in virtual reality.

Participants arrive approximately ten minutes before the formal practice begins. This period allows newcomers to orient themselves to the environment, resolve basic technical questions, become comfortable with the social setting, and settle before beginning the meditation.

Once the guided practice begins, participant microphones are muted to create a quiet, uninterrupted environment. The body scan then progresses systematically through the body using clear verbal guidance and an unhurried pace. Participants may sit or lie down and are encouraged to engage with the practice at their own pace.

Following the meditation, the environment shifts back into a social space. Participants may stay for discussion, ask questions, or, particularly when they are new to ENGAGE XR, explore additional virtual environments.

Facilitation Approach

The practice is delivered live rather than through prerecorded instruction. This allows the experience to retain the presence and pacing of a facilitated meditation while taking place entirely within an immersive social platform.

My approach draws on more than two decades of classroom teaching and facilitation, my background in media psychology and immersive technology, and my experience with contemplative practice. Particular attention is given to pacing, verbal clarity, transitions, participant autonomy, and creating sufficient structure for newcomers without disrupting the contemplative experience for returning participants.

The facilitator participates via desktop rather than through a headset, allowing continuous oversight of the virtual environment while guiding the meditation.

Evolution Over Three Years

The body scan has functioned as an ongoing practice. Repeated weekly facilitation has provided an opportunity to refine the experience over time.

The original approximately 25-minute meditation gradually developed into a 35–40 minute practice as I refined its pacing, transitions, instructions, and opportunities for silence. The surrounding session structure also evolved to accommodate the realities of facilitating contemplative practice in social VR, including onboarding participants with different levels of technical familiarity and establishing clear transitions between social interaction and meditation.

The resulting format now follows a consistent one-hour structure:

9:00 a.m. PT — Arrival and orientation
Participants enter the environment, settle in, ask questions, and receive assistance if needed.

9:10 a.m. PT — Guided body scan
Microphones are muted, and the 35–40 minute live guided practice begins.

Approximately 9:50 a.m. PT — Re-entry and conversation
Participants are invited to return gradually to the shared social environment.

By 10:00 a.m. PT — Optional exploration and close
Participants may ask questions, talk with others, or briefly explore ENGAGE XR environments.

What This Project Demonstrates

This ongoing project demonstrates the intersection of immersive experience design,
live facilitation, media psychology, contemplative practice, and learning design. The project also demonstrates long-term facilitation. Three years of recurring delivery have allowed the experience to be iteratively refined through practice and observation while maintaining a simple central objective: creating a virtual environment in which participants can settle, attend to embodied experience, and practice sustained present-moment awareness.
